ALAPPUZHA: District collector T V Anupama said that she has directed all the departments concerned to keep vigilant as the district got alert for severe weather – heavy or extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Speaking to TOI, Anupama said that Alappuzha is not facing a situation that prevails in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts. "However, we have taken all the possible steps for ensuring the safety of people.
We have also contacted the district administration of other neighbouring districts like Pathanamthitta for ensuring the safety of Kuttanad people. If rainfall is high in Pathanamthitta and other neighbouring hilly districts, the water level will go high in Kuttanad. So we are keeping in touch with the district administration of our neighbouring districts. I have spoken to my counterpart in Pathanathitta and we are taking all the possible steps for the safety of people. Irrigation department has been directed to take steps to ensure the safety of Kuttanad people," Anupama said.
"Now we don’t want to evacuate the people from the coastal belt and the situation is under control," Anupama said.
"We have advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and urged tourists and people living along coastal areas to remain vigilant. I have also convened a meeting of members of district disaster management committee and took stock of the situation,” she said.
