Beed constable has no female reproductive organs: JJ doctors
MUMBAI: A series of tests carried out on Monday at the JJ Hospital on Lalita Salve, the woman constable from Beed who has petitioned the Bombay high court for a gender reassignment surgery, has established that she has no “female reproductive organs”. Sources said that the report was likely to be in her favour of undergoing the operation.
Still, whether she would ultimately need the surgery is awaiting a medical opinion.
“She has underdeveloped male genitalia and is definitely more of a male. She doesn’t have any female reproductive organs such as vagina or uterus. It looks like a case of gender dysphoria, where she was born a male with underdeveloped male parts, but was assigned the female gender at birth and raised as a girl,” the source said.
In typical gender reassignment surgeries, a person undergoing the change has to go through a regime of hormonal treatment and surgical creation of reproductive organs of the gender that he or she is transforming into. “However Salve’s case is not where organs have to be created as they already exist. They are just underdeveloped but experts dealing with gender disorders may be better equipped to comment if she will need a surgery at all,” the source said. Salve’s chromosomal study has already shown the presence of the XY chromosome.
JJ Hospital said the final report will be submitted on Tuesday. Salve moved court after the police rejected her plea for leave and request to continue as a male constable post-surgery. She then moved the HC.
