Solution soon to Nagar Road woes

The civic administration and the traffic police on Thursday announced various measures to be taken over the next 15 days to reduce daily congestion on the busy Ahmednagar road. The measures will be enforced on a 4km stretch between Yerawada and Kharadi.

PUNE: The civic administration and the traffic police on Thursday announced various measures to be taken over the next 15 days to reduce daily congestion on the busy Ahmednagar road. The measures will be enforced on a 4km stretch between Yerawada and Kharadi.
The traffic cops will not allow private luxury buses to halt at Yerawada and Shastrinagar chowks, while Pune Municipal Corporation will remove encroachments on this stretch, up to Kharadi, and relocate the hawkers at designated spots by the end of December.

The alignment of bus rapid transit system (BRTS) lanes will also undergo minor changes at a couple of locations. The municipal administration will take up a study to initiate the process of land acquisition for a riverside road up to Kharadi.
The decisions were announced at a meeting held by municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar, in the presence of local corporators and traffic department officials. The meeting was also attended by representatives of malls and IT companies located on the road.

Deputy mayor Siddharth Dhende said they had called for the meeting was called after repeated accidents, some fatal, were recorded on the road. Commuters jhave been complaining every day, Dhende said.
About 18 corporators from Ahmednagar Road and nearby areas were present at the meeting. The corporators urged the administration to implement these measures at the earliest and Dhende assured them they would start in the next 15 days.
The representatives of IT companies were willing to deploy about 40 traffic wardens at prominent chowks to held the traffic police during peak hours, Dhende said.
The road will also have a metro corridor up to Ramwadi. Dhende said the PMC plans to prepare a detailed report with MahaMetro in this regard. Recently, residents of the area held an agitation to draw the civic authorities’ attention to the unsafe travel conditions on the road.
