Tikamgarh, December 11

At least 20 passengers, including three women and a girl, were injured when a bus fell into a deep gorge of a dry river in the district early on Monday morning, police said.

The private bus skidded off a bridge near Chandpura village around 4 am and fell into the 15-ft-deep gorge of Jamni river, about 75 km from the district headquarters, Prithvipur police station in-charge CL Parihar said.

The bus, carrying around 65 passengers, was going from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh towards Khargapur town of Tikamgarh when its driver lost control over the wheel on the bridge, he said.

As a result the bus fell into the river, which was dry, the official said.

The driver and other staff of the bus fled the spot after the accident.

A seriously hurt passenger was referred to Jhansi for treatment while the other injured were given first aid at a primary health centre in Prithvipur town here and allowed to go home, Parihar said.

The injured people included a nine-year old girl and three women, he added. PTI
