Gujarat election 2017 LIVE UPDATES Phase 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today cast his vote in the second phase of Gujarat Assembly elections 2017. He waited in a queue to exercise his right at a polling booth set up at a school in Sabarmati constituency of Ahmedabad district. After an unexpectedly heated campaign by leaders of BJP and Congress, polling for the Phase 2 of Assembly elections began in 93 constituencies across the state this morning. Besides PM Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, state Congress president Bharat Solanki and Patidar leader Hardik Patel were amongst those who voted. PM’s mother Heeraben also turned up among early voters and cast her vote in a polling booth in Gandhinagar. Meanwhile, Congress has lashed out at the Election Commission (EC) for allowing PM Modi to hold ‘roadshow’ in Ahmedabad. The party has termed the EC as ‘captive puppet’ of BJP. 12: 01 pm: BJP’s Tejshreeben Patel casts her vote in Viramgaam

11: 56 am: People gather in large numbers in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will cast his vote. PM Modi will cast his vote at booth number 115. The BJP has been in power in Gujarat for the last 22 years. The Congress is also looking to make a comeback.

11: 53 am: PM Modi arrived in Ahmedabad to cast his vote. He took to Twitter and said –

11: 52 am: Amit Shah said the development model of Gujarat is “praised across the country”. “I believe this tempo should be maintained, and the people should vote in large numbers to give a befitting reply to those opposing the Gujarat model,” he said.

11: 50 am: Earlier in the day, after casting his vote in the Naranpura area, BJP chief Amit Shah appealed to the public to come out to vote in large numbers to carry forward the “journey of development”. He came to the polling booth at the Naranpura sub-zonal office to cast vote along with his wife Sonal Shah and son Jay Shah. “I would like to appeal to the voters to come out in large numbers to cast their vote to take ahead the journey of development,” Amit Shah told reporters after coming out of the polling booth.

11: 35 am: Zero per cent voter turnout in Savli, Waghodia, Padra, Akota and Vadodara City Assembly Constituencies in Vadodara District. Officials say the figures haven’t been tallied yet … so they have released it as zero per cent.

11: 13 am: At 10 am, average voter turnout in Anand district is at 13% and 11.77% in Patan district.

11: 11 am: A delegation of Congress leaders comprising Ashok Gehlot, Anand Sharma and Randeep Surjewala handed over a memorandum to the poll body, demanding strong action against Modi and other BJP leaders for addressing press conferences and events on the eve of the last phase of polling in Gujarat. “We are going to the Election Commission with a memorandum demanding action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah, Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Piyush Goyal and others for violating the model code,” Anand Sharma told reporters before meeting the poll panel. He said the EC should remain non-partisan.

11: 08 am: Meanwhile, the Congress has petitioned the Election Commission for action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for addressing an event organised by an industry body on the eve of the final phase of the Gujarat polls where he attacked the main opposition party.

10: 55 am: At 10:30 am, Ahmedabad district’s average voter turnout is reported to be 9.6%, reported News18.

10: 50 am: While speaking to media, PAAS leader Hardik Patel said, “Vote against those who oppressed us. I am confident that six crore Gujaratis will win on 18 December.”

10: 40 am: Deputy CM Nitin Patel casts his vote in Mehsana’s Kadi. He is contesting against Congress’s Jivabhai Patel.

10: 38 am: After an acrimonious campaign, around 2.22 crore voters would be exercising their franchise today to choose between the two main contenders, the BJP and the Congress. A total of 851 candidates are in fray for the second phase. The first phase of voting for the 182-member House, held on December 9, covered 89 seats. Voting began at 8 am today and will end at 5 this evening. Votes will be counted on Monday, December 18.

10: 32 am: Former chief minister Anandiben Patel also cast her vote. Patel, who is not contesting the election, cast her vote at a polling booth in Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodia Assembly constituency, from where she was an MLA. This time, the BJP has fielded Bhupendra Patel from the seat, who is pitted against Congress’ Shashikant Patel. “I am sure that BJP will achieve the target it has set for itself and the party will again form the government. Our candidate will get more votes than what I had got, and the Patidar factor is not going to affect us,” Patel told reporters after casting her vote.

10: 29 am: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother Hiraba today cast her vote at a poll booth located at Aryabhatt High School in Gandhinagar today. She was accompanied by her younger son Pankaj Modi and other family members. After casting her vote, the prime minister’s mother, who is in her 90s, showed her inked finger to mediapersons outside the poll booth. “May God bless Gujarat,” she told the reporters while emerging out of the poll booth.

10: 27 am:  “I appeal to the people of Gujarat to vote on the lotus mark and pave the way for development’s victory. Vote first and have breakfast after,” tweets BJP spokesperson.

10: 25 am: Low turnout was witnessed at almost every booth in Juhapura, the Muslim-dominated area of Ahmedabad, reported the ET. Some booths recorded as low as 20 votes till 9.30am, the report added.

10: 22 am: The EVM in Sankheda’s Sodhaliya village in Chhota Udaipur was dysfunctional for 50 minutes, so voting was halted for that duration. We fixed the machine and now the voting is underway: Gaurang Rana, Polling Officer,

10: 16 am: BJP veteran L K Advani has not campaigned in Gujarat, but he will be in the state on Thursday to vote, reported the Indian Express. While Advani will vote at a booth in Jamalpur-Khadiya Assembly constituency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will vote around noon — in Sabarmati constituency.

10: 10 am: Gujarat Deputy CM Nitin Patel offers his prayers in a temple ahead of casting his vote in the second phase of the Gujarat elections.

10: 04 am: After casting his vote in Ahmedabad’s Vejalpur, FM Aru Jaitley appealed to the people of the state to come out and vote in heavy numbers. While addressing the media, FM said that Gujarat has moved forward in terms of development, and continues the ‘Vikas Yatra’. “Main Gujarat ki janta se appeal karta hoon ki vo bhaari maatra mein aayen aur vote karein, vikas yatra ko qayam rakhein,” says Jaitley.

10: 00 am: Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today sent a tough message on ‘proxy war’, terrorism and issues pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir. He said this in Mumbai while commissioning India’s first indigenously-built Scorpene-class submarine ‘INS Kalvari’ into the Indian Navy.

8: 11 am: In the final stages of the electioneering, Modi set off a political firestorm after he alleged during a rally in Palanpur that Pakistan was trying to influence the Gujarat polls. He claimed that some Pakistani officials and former prime minister Manmohan Singh met a day before Mani Shankar Aiyar made the “neech aadmi” jibe against him. However, the next day Manmohan Singh asked Modi to apologise to the nation for his remarks.
