Exit poll results are out after voting ended for the second phase of Gujarat elections for 93 assembly constituencies at 5pm today. Here are the latest updates and developments

NEW DELHI :Exit polls on Thursday predicted a victory for the ruling BJP in Gujarat, giving it a clear majority in the keenly-contested assembly polls in the state. The exit polls results came out soon after voting ended at 5pm for 93 assembly constituencies for the second phase of Gujarat elections. The second and last phase of Gujarat elections saw polling in northern, central and tribal areas. Of the 93 constituencies went to polls on Thursday, 52 were won by the BJP and 39 by the Congress in 2012. The results of both Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections will be declared on Monday.With the poll process over, all eyes are now on exit polls. Others to win 0-2 seats.In South Gujarat’s 35 seats, the survey gives BJP 21-27 seats (52% vote share), while the Congress is expected to win 9-13 seats (40% vote share). No substance in EVM tampering via bluetooth devices: EC

While the polling was largely peaceful, two incidents of clashes were reported in Mehsana and Vadodara districts, police officials said. The EC received complaints from five places that electronic voting machines (EVMs) were connecting to external devices via bluetooth, but after inquiry, it was found that there was “no substance” in the complaints, poll officials said.Complaints of EVMs getting connected to the external devices via bluetooth were received from Patan, Kheda, Mehsana districts, Ghatlodia in Ahmedabad district and Godhra in Panchamahal district. The EC today also said that there were reports of malfunctioning of EVMs and voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) at some places in Aravalli and Panchmahal districts. (PTI)

Voter turnout recorded 47% till 2pm

The second phase of Gujarat elections recorded 47.40% voter turnout till 2pm, according B.B. Swain, Gujarat’s chief electoral officer. Swain also said that the EC received a EVM related complaint.“We received a complaint from a person, apparently when he switched on bluetooth on his mobile phone it connected to the machine, we are checking this at every place, senior officers and observers at the spot to check this,” ANI quoted Swain as saying in Ahmedabad.He also informed about a complaint over the violation of model code of conduct.“Have received a complaint regarding MCC violation after casting of the vote. It is a complaint which is is more anticipatory in nature which says crowd was there and this could be a roadshow. This complaint has been given to DEO Ahmedabad,” Swain said.

Rahul’s interview: EC Officials to decide if model code violated

Election officials in Gujarat are going through Congress president-elect Rahul Gandhi’s television interviews to see if any legal provisions related to the country’s poll code were violated by the channels which aired them, an official said today. Gujarat chief electoral officer B. B. Swain said all the videos of Gandhi’s interviews telecast yesterday had been obtained. “The Election Commission yesterday directed us to take action after screening the videos of the interviews to decide if there was any violation of legal provisions, as prescribed under section 126(1)(b) of the Representation of People Act,” Swain told reporters in Gandhinagar. “Our officials acquired those videos today. The screening process has been initiated,” he said. (PTI)

Chidambaram raps EC for issuing Rahul show cause notice

Congress leader P. Chidambaram today asked the Election Commission why it picked on the party’s president-elect Rahul Gandhi for giving media interviews while leaving out BJP leaders who did the same thing. In a series of tweets, Chidambaram accused the poll panel of sleeping on the job and also asked people in Gujarat to exercise their franchise and “change” the BJP government in the state. “Yesterday, PM made a speech. BJP’s President gave an interview. Railway Minister gave an interview. Why have all these escaped the EC’s attention? Why pick on only Mr Rahul Gandhi’s interview?” Chidambaram said. (PTI)

EC acting like BJP’s puppet, PM’s ‘roadshow’ violation of model code

The Congress today said the Election Commission was a BJP “puppet” for not acting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his “roadshow” in Gujarat. The prime minister had violated the model code of conduct by holding a “roadshow” after voting in the Gujarat Assembly polls, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala alleged. Addressing a press conference, he said the poll panel was a “puppet and frontal organisation” of the ruling BJP as it took no action against Modi. “It is a sad day for the country as EC has denigrated the Constitution,” Surjewala said. Congress seeks action against Modi, Shah for violation of model code The Congress has petitioned the Election Commission for action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for addressing an event organised by an industry body on the eve of the final phase of the Gujarat polls where he attacked the main opposition party.
