A surprised seal, a laughing mouse and a triumphant sea otter were among the highlights of the annual Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards.
Pro shutterbugs, cat ladies and animal enthusiasts from across the globe submitted more than 3,500 entries for a chance to be one of Thursday’s winners in the British-based competition’s five categories: The Land, Under The Sea, Portfolio, Juniors and an overall best.
Some natural comedians that did not win include a sea otter floating on his back with his paws to the sky, photographed by Penny Palmer in California. The pose looks straight out of a marathon finish line.
Another favorite was a seal in San Simeon, Calif., that was captured staring at a pal with a mix of surprise, wonder and bewilderment. It was shot by George Cathcart.
A tiny mouse, exact species unknown, won the On The Land category with its exuberant expression as it lounged in some flowers in Italy.
