Business boom creates traffic nightmare on Collins Road

2-lane road can't handle heavy traffic box stores bring, drivers say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As businesses continue to open along the Clay-Duval County border, drivers are facing more and more headaches on Collins Road.

West of I-295, the road narrows to two lanes and gridlock is becoming common.

A Walmart has recently opened and a Costco is set to open in the Spring. The two big-box stores are across the street from one another, not far from where a multi-lane highway becomes more like a small city street.

Driver Pam Clark called the road “hell” to navigate. She's lived in the area for 40 years and said the two-lane section of Collins Road is ripe for accidents.

“That’s where everyone tries to cut over,” she explained. “You take your life in your hands once you cross Rampart (Road).”

JTA began a project in September that will widen the road, but it won't be finished until 2020.

“Sometimes that little two-lane, one way this way, one way that, it gets congested, especially when church is letting out,” resident Will McKenzie said.

The widening of Collins Road isn’t the only road project in the area. Another road is being built that will allow shoppers to access Costco from Argyle Forest Boulevard.
