Vladimir Putin has called US President Donald Trump to thank him for a CIA tip-off which helped prevent a terrorist bomb attack in St Petersburg.

Russia’s president phoned Mr Trump on Sunday and promised to return the favour if the Kremlin learns of any potential terror threats against the US.

It is the second phone call between the two leaders since Thursday, when Mr Trump thanked Mr Putin for comments he made “acknowledging America’s strong economic performance”.

The phone conversations come as speculation grows over the next steps of Robert Mueller’s probe into whether Mr Trump’s presidential election campaign was helped by Russian officials.

The Russia probe has shadowed the White House for most of the president’s first year in office following his inauguration in January.

On Sunday, the Kremlin said Mr Putin had expressed gratitude for information provided by the CIA which allowed Russia’s top security agency to track down and arrest a group of suspects.

The Islamic State group were reportedly planning to bomb Kazan Cathedral and other crowded sites in St Petersburg.

In April, a suicide bombing in the city’s subway left 16 dead and wounded more than 50.

During the first phone call, the two world leaders also discussed ways to work together to address North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic weapons programme.
