State to insist on ‘national disaster’ tag for cyclone

The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday decided to ask the Centre for financial assistance to rebuild infrastructure in the Ockhi-hit Kanniyakumari district and nearby areas.

The government also decided to reiterate its demand to declare Ockhi a national disaster, besides urging the Centre to set up a fishing harbour in Kanniyakumari district.

During a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami in the Secretariat here on Sunday, Commissioner of Revenue Administration K. Satyagopal submitted a report estimating the loss of lives and damages incurred due to the natural disaster.

He presented a compilation of estimates from various departments as a report.

Infrastructure challenge

Based on the estimates arrived, a report would be prepared for seeking financial assistance from the Centre.

The meeting also decided to urge the Centre to provide necessary financial assistance for the losses suffered.

It is estimated that about 15,800 electric posts and 92 transformers have been damaged due to the cyclone.

Over 98 km of the national highway and 75 km of the State highway, besides roads under the control of local bodies in the cyclone-affected areas need to be restored.

Waterbodies falling under the administrative control of the Public Works Department also need to be restored.

The State government would also reiterate its earlier request for financial support for an integrated storm water drainage project by integrating the Adyar and the Cooum rivers and the Buckingham Canal.

Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and Ministers Dindigul C. Sreenivasan, P. Thangamani, S.P. Velumani, D. Jayakumar, R. Doraikkannu and R.B. Udhayakumar were present during the meeting.

Senior officials led by Chief Secretary (in-charge) and Finance Secretary K. Shanmugam were also present.
