PATNA: Rail traffic on the Kiul-Jamalpur section remained suspended throughout the day on Wednesday till security forces rescued an assistant station master (ASM) and a porter who had been abducted by Maoists on Tuesday-Wednesday midnight.
The Maoists had threatened to kill ASM Mukesh Kumar and porter Devendra Kumar Mandal abducted from Madhusudan railway halt in Lakhisarai district, 130km from Patna, if trains were plied on the route.

Wednesday was the last day of the three-day bandh called by the CPI (Maoist) in Bihar and Jharkhand in protest against the ongoing crackdown in the bordering districts of the two states. The onslaught has resulted in the recovery of arms, ammunitions and IEDs (improvised explosive device).
The Maoists also shot Sangrampur’s up-mukhiya Virendra Koda (32) after dragging him out of his house in Lakhisarai’s Kacchawa village, 150km from Patna, and taking him to the jungles. Police said Koda was earlier associated with Maoists.
“After the Maoists abducted the ASM and the porter, they made a call from the ASM’s cellphone to the Malda DRM in West Bengal and asked him not to ply any train on the section or else the abducted railmen would be killed,” Lakhisarai SP Arvind Thakur told TOI over the phone.
A joint operation of the Special Task Force, CoBRA of Central Reserve Police Force and district police was immediately launched to rescue the duo,” the SP said and added the duo were later found from Jagdishpur village in neighbouring Munger where they had been released around 6pm.
East Central Railway’s chief public relations officer Rajesh Kumar earlier said in a press release that the trains detained by the railways following the violence included Farakka Express and Muzaffarpur-Bhagalpur Jan Sewa Express at Kiul, Banka Express at Barahiya and Jayanagar Howrah passenger train at Dinkar Gram Samaria.
