VIJAYAPURA: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will handle the rape and murder case of the 15-year-old Dalit girl, said Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah in Vijaypura on Thursday.

On Tuesday, a Class IX girl was abducted, raped and murdered by a group of boys. The incident occurred in broad daylight when the girl was going to her school accompanied by her younger sister.

The younger sister, who escaped from the clutches of the gang, informed her teachers about the incident. The girl was found dead in a room when the teachers arrived.

The Vijayapura police have taken five boys, including two minors, into custody and are currently interrogating. The medical reports are yet to confirm whether the victim was gang-raped before being murdered.

The police are waiting for the autopsy report which is expected by Thursday evening or Friday.

Vijayapura Bandh on Saturday

Condemning the incident, Dalit organisations and other NGOs have called for a bandh in Vijayapura on Saturday. The forums have demanded that the culprits must be arrested at the earliest.

Shrikanth Pujari, President, Dalit Vidyarthi Parishat, said, “The political parties are trying to gain out a heinous crime. All we are demanding is that the accused must be arrested and booked at the earliest. We have requested the chief minister to ensure the CID team will have officers with clean records and members from the minority commission.”
