PATNA: At least six persons, including a woman, drowned on Tuesday noon as the boat carrying them capsized in a tributary of the Ganga near Bhagwan Ghat under the Parbatta police station area in Khagaria district, around 220km from Patna.
Police sources said their bodies were fished out from the river. At least 14 persons were on the overloaded small boat. They were going to the diara area from Kentha Kanti panchayat for farming on the other side of the tributary.
Parbatta block development officer (BDO) Dr Kundan said four deceased were identified as Kailu Das (50), Indu Kumari (25), Aghori Sharma (52) and Prahlad Sharma.
“The other two deceased were yet to be identified,” the BDO told TOI over phone. He said Kailu was a resident of Rahimpur panchayat while the other three identified deceased belonged to Kentha Kanti panchayat. The BDO said the bodies were sent for post mortem.
“Eight of the 14 persons, including the boatman, swam to safety,” he said. Quoting the survivors, the BDO said more than five big sacks of fertilizers were loaded on the small boat for use in the fields. “As soon as the boat left the river bank, it lost balance due to strong winds and capsized,” he added.
The BDO further said a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team and two motor boats were pressed into search operation. Local divers were also used by the administration.
