NEW DELHI: South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Thursday sealed 29 shops in Chhatarpur, which included marble shops, general stores and eateries, as part of the sealing drive ordered by the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee.
While 120 shops in the area have been charged for violating Master Plan 2021 by carrying out commercial activity on agricultural land, the civic body has so far sealed 67 shops and one farmhouse in the past three days. “The remaining shops will be sealed within a couple of days,” said a senior south corporation official.
The monitoring committee chairperson KJ Rao rebutted the contention of the owners that the action was “illegal” saying that they don’t need to give “any notice prior to sealing.”
North corporation also carried out a re-sealing drive in Rajapur village near Rohini on directions of the monitoring committee.
In total, 243 shops had been sealed in 2007, but they had opened up again.
Meanwhile, East Delhi Municipal Corporation on Thursday demolished 41 shops in Mayur Vihar-III. However, the drive was not a part of the monitoring committee’s order. The civic body took action as a routine process to clear encroachments in their jurisdiction. tnn
