One of the world’s preeminent newspapers is touting Saskatoon — thanks to the city’s new art gallery — as one of the top places in the world to visit this year.
As part of a travel feature published by The New York Times, titled “52 places to go in 2018: A starter kit for escaping into the world,” Saskatoon was listed at No. 18 — the only Canadian city to be included.
The Times’ interactive feature said “Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and other heavyweight 20th-century artists now have a home in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, thanks to the (Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan). A centrepiece of Saskatoon’s redeveloping riverfront, the museum sports world-class modernist architecture and an 8,000-work collection.”
The piece also referenced the newly-expanded and refurbished Saskatoon International Airport and the soon-to-be-built Alt Hotel.
Mayor Charlie Clark was quick to share the Times’ feature, tweeting: “Welcome World! Come for the art, stay for the people.”
The top-five spots to visit this year, according to the Times’ travel piece, are New Orleans; Colombia; Basilicata, Italy; the Caribbean; and Vierwaldstattersee, Switzerland.
