Lampard, 39, was one of the most feared midfielders of his generation after a prolific career for the Blues.
But it was almost over before it began, as the goal-machine revealed the brass instrument almost killed him as a kid.
Lampard said he accidentally swallowed the trumpet mouthpiece, forcing an emergency visit to hospital.
He told The Guardian: "I swallowed the mouthpiece of a trumpet as a kid.
"It nearly killed me. I had to go to hospital to have it taken out."
In a candid interview with the paper, the former Man City, West Ham and New York City player unveiled details of how he got engaged to wife Christine Lampard.
He continued: "I proposed to Christine on Santa Monica beach in LA. I even designed the ring myself.
"But to keep it under wraps I got a friend to fly out and secretly pass it to me at the hotel.
"I then phoned Christine's dad to ask permission – I ended up speaking to her mum but she insisted he'd be happy and all went to plan."
