Bus company finds a smarter way to pay the fare
SONGJIANG Public Transport Company rolled out its QR code system on a trial basis, enabling passengers on bus routes No. 17 and 18 to pay by scanning the code via a “Smart Songjiang” app with their mobile phones.
All the buses on those lines have had a QR code scanner installed beside the slot machine and the card reader. The upper part of the machine is for scanning, and has a built-in camera; the lower area is an electronic screen displaying ticket price and route.
Passengers first need to download the “Smart Songjiang” app and register. The platform will automatically open an electronic account for each user with Bank of Shanghai. The account can be topped up by debit card, with the smallest deposit 20 yuan (US$3.08). To take a bus, the rider needs to enable the app, press the “scanning QR code” button to get a QR code to be scanned by the machine. Then a voice prompt “scanning succeeded, please board the bus” will confirm payment is complete.
Currently, the Android app is in service, while the app for ios phones will be available in the near future.
“QR code scanning ride provides the passengers with a new choice, which features speedy payment, financial safety, and convenient topping up channels,” said a transport company official.
The bus company trialed the system on the No. 17 and 18 buses because these lines had a higher proportion of younger passengers. During the trial, passengers could suggest ways via the app that the system could be improved.
