DOHA: Independent preparatory and secondary school students are participating in the second edition of “Scientific Researchers Competition” being organised by Qatar Scientific Club (QSC). This year the competition is being held under the theme “Together We Enrich Our Knowledge and Economy”.

The Qatar Scientific Club works under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

The competition aims to be in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 to encourage research activities among students. Students have used their scientific knowledge and skills to implement their ideas.

The competition started yesterday and will end today with an award ceremony at Qatar Scientific Club. Competitions were held in computer, communication, engineering, geology and environmental science categories.

The winning team will be awarded with QR5,000, second place team will win QR4,000 and third position holder will be given QR3,000.

The winning researchers will participate in 10th National Exhibition for Research of Students and Teachers 2018.

Hareb Mohammed Al Jabri, Executive Director at QSC, told The Peninsula: “We are surprised to see children participating with enthusiasm. The aim of the competition is to enhance the research skills that students already have. We are proud to witness students thinking about their country in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.”

“Their researches prove that they are well aware of the situation in Qatar. The methodology of their research predicts that they will show remarkable performance in area of research in near future. Students have come up with solutions in agriculture, technology, special needs facilities, 2022 FIFA World Cup accessibility and many other areas,” Al Jabri added.

He said that junior researches had made the selection of winners difficult as the jury was now in a tough situation to select the best one out of all amazing projects.

The first competition was launched in September 2017 and 39 researchers participated from 20 different schools.

This year most of the researches focused on 2022 FIFA World Cup and Qatar National Vision 2030. Students from Al Noor Language Private School developed an application for people who will use the buses in 2022.

Talking on the application, Omer Maged, a student of Al Noor Language Private School said: “Our application mainly focuses and encourages people to use public transportation. Just like Uber and Careem, information about buses in Qatar will be available. This application will encourage people coming from different countries to use an economical way of transportation.”

Another student from Al Noor Language School has developed an emergency panic button for spectators in stadiums during 2022 World Cup. Aisha Al Ansari said that the idea of the project was to provide more sources to identify any incident happening in the stadium and provide the rescue assistance needed in minimum possible time.

“When the emergency button will be pushed, the LED and the buzzer will turn on in the control room. The security will be able to check the place with camera to verify the emergency and will facilitate the person.”
Muhammed Al Kuwari, head of electronic department at QSC has been appointed as member of the jury of the competition. Al Kuwari said that students had come up with innovative ideas which showed their thinking level was much more higher than their ages.

“The correct guidance of teachers has refined their abilities. The 3D models made by students have left me out of words and this level of research work is done by the engineers and researchers of higher level. We will select three projects each from boys and girls categories.”
