It is clear that Apple definitely needs some kind of hit show if they are hoping for their video efforts to be taken more seriously. So far the company has launched a handful of shows, but it is obvious that none of them were the smashing successes that Apple had hoped for them to be, save for maybe Carpool Karaoke which was already famous before Apple acquired it.

However Apple could be looking to bring in the big guns, according to a report from Variety in which it seems that Apple is in a bidding war with HBO in an attempt to get J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sci-fi drama series. Details about the series are scarce at this point in time, but it will basically be a show about the world’s battle against an oppressive force. It would also mark Abrams’ return to TV since the “Fringe” series in 2008.

Unsurprisingly, Warner Bros., HBO, and Apple have declined to comment on the rumors. Assuming Apple is successful in their bid, especially considering the vast amount of resources at their disposal, it is unclear when the show will be debuting, and whether or not it will be part of Apple Music or if it could be folded into Apple TV. Either way take it with a grain of salt, but we’ll keep our eyes and ears peeled for more info.
