NEW DELHI: The Delhi police has arrested a man who transformed from  a hawker into a criminal out on the prowl of gullible vendors in Okhla Sabzi Mandi.

According to the police, the alert Jamia Nagar police, detected and arrested the armed criminal identified as Mohammed Sharfaraz, 23, a resident of Khurja, Bulandsahar, Uttar Pradesh. They recovered an illegal country-made pistol with one live cartridge from Sharfaraz’s possession.

During patrol duty, SI Bhagwan Singh along with constables Sachin and Surender reached near Dhobi Ghat Yamuna Pusta, Jamia Nagar and noticed three boys, who were sitting there, running away upon seeing them. The police got suspicious and gave chase and managed to catch one of them, Sharfaraz.

During sustained interrogation, the accused revealed that he is a native of Khurja, Bulandshahar and came to Okhla Sabzi Mandi for hawking vegetables last year.  He worked there for five to six months, but the money he earned was not enough to meet his needs.

So around two months ago, he returned to his village and planned to threaten and rob people at gunpoint to earn quick money. He arranged for a country-made pistol and came to Jamia Nagar to meet his friends. His plan was to rob people along with his friends. He met his friends/associates Kashif and Kunna at Yamuna Pusta as he did not their addresses.

The police further said that the accused had disclosed that while hawking in the Okhla Sabzi Mandi he saw some local criminals bullying his fellow vendors. Fascinated, he wanted to emulate them; Sharfaraz told the police that he also planned to extort and rob vendors in the mandi. (It may be recalled that few days ago, the staff of Sriniwaspuri Chowki, Southeast district has knocked down a member of one such gang operating in the Okhla Sabzi Mandi).
