Slimming World followers can rejoice as a popular fruit has been added to the speed free food’ list.

Under the plan, slimmers have been able to eat as much fruit and veg as they like but some are better for weight loss than others.

Some fruits, such as blueberries, cherries and mango, are only classed as free which means members still have to watch what they are consuming.

But now, Slimming World has reclassified blueberries as a speed free food - to the delight of members.

Speed free food is a classification given to foods that are very low in calories, so are especially good for weight loss.

Followers of the plan have to fill two thirds of their plates with ‘free’ foods - such as lean meat, rice and potatoes - and one third needs to be ‘speed’ food - mostly fruit of veg.

A Slimming World spokesperson said the popular fruit had been reclassified because information shows varieties being eaten are on average lower in calories than in previous years.

They added: “We’re now eating blueberries grown in and imported from many different countries meaning that they’re exposed to different climates, soils and harvesting and growing conditions, which can all impact on their composition.

“As a result, blueberries now qualify as not just a Free Food (foods which can be enjoyed freely by our members without weighing, counting and measuring), but as a Speed Free Food, so they are ideal for snacking on, for sprinkling on your breakfast or enjoying as part of a dessert after a delicious healthy meal.”

They said it is “fabulous news” for Slimming World members.

The spokesperson added: “Every year we use a range of sources to gather the latest nutrition information about basic, everyday foods and we check all of our Free Food products against these.

“We also continually monitor information declared on packaging.”

News of the change has been welcomed by members on Facebook.
