Tottenham analysis: Christian Eriksen a big miss as Spurs face daunting run to save Champions League hopes

Tottenham missed the chance to move into the Premier League's top four as they drew 1-1 at Southampton.

Harry Kane scored his 99th league goal after Davinson Sanchez had given Southampton a surprise first-half lead by turning the ball into his own net.

Both sides had chances to nick a late winner but Spurs were the more frustrated at the final whistle, with fourth-placed Liverpool now able to pull five points clear with a win over Swansea on Monday.

Tottenham missed the craft of Eriksen

The Denmark midfielder was missing through illness at St Mary’s and Spurs lacked creativity without him in the team.

Heung-min Son was quiet and Moussa Sissoko struggled.

Tottenham missed Eriksen’s ability to thread a pass a they ran out of ideas and his absence was a big factor in why Spurs were unable to break Southampton down.

Spurs lose ground in Champions League race

Manchester United and Chelsea won on Saturday and if Liverpool beat Swansea on Monday then Spurs will be five points outside the top four after they dropped points against Southampton.

This was a bad result for Tottenham against a Southampton team who have been struggling badly.

Pochettino's men face Newport County away in the FA Cup next Saturday and then play Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League before the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie against Juventus.

Tottenham could not afford to drop points against Southampton and their next three League games now take on added significance.

Kane should have joined 100 club

Harry Kane is now just one goal away from 100 in the League, but he wasted a brilliant chance to win it for Tottenham in the final minute.

Kane moved onto 99 goals in the League when he headed Tottenham level, and should have moved onto his ton - but he dragged a shot wide in the closing moments when he should have hit the target.

Son struggles away from Wembley

Son has scored in five consecutive home games but has only scored one goal in 11 matches away from Wembley and was ineffective at St Mary's.
