BHUBANESWAR: Nearly two months after the state police dismissed the sensational gangrape allegation of a 14-year-old schoolgirl against four uniformed security personnel in Maoist-hit Koraput district, the alleged rape survivor committed suicide at her village on Monday.
“I have asked the Koraput SP to find out the circumstances leading to her death,” director general of police R P Sharma said. Her family blamed the police for hushing up the case.
“My daughter had been suffering the trauma after being raped by four security personnel on October 10, 2017. We received a jolt when the police in November last year said she was not raped,” her mother said. Opposition Congress, BJP and social activists too were critical against the police. The political parties alleged the police purposely suppressed the case to shield their ilk.
On December 29, 2017, the victim had come to Bhubaneswar to participate in an event where she dropped a bombshell and pointed fingers at some senior police personnel, accusing them of attempting to bribe her. She had then alleged the police personnel tortured her and pressured her to withdraw her complaint.
Amidst public hue and cry, the state government had then ordered twin probes--Crime Branch and judicial--to find out the truth. Police, citing the medical examination report, said the girl was not subjected to any sexual intercourse or sodomy, as alleged by her, either forceful or consensual, on October 10. Police said the chemical or forensic examination of her clothes did not indicate any evidence of sexual intercourse.
