NAWADA: In a suspected case of honour killing, a 24-year-old youth was beaten to death at Hardia under the Rajauli police station area of the district on Monday night.
The deceased, Vidya Sagar, was the ‘bhagina’ (sister’s son) of former Rajauli MLA Kanhaiya Rajbanshi. He had married one Rina from another caste of Hardia village last year. Rina has lodged an FIR against nine persons of her own caste.
Police sources said Rina’s caste men had resented her love marriage with Vidya Sagar, who hailed from Kushiabigha village under the Narhat police station area of the district.
Rajauli police station SHO Awdhesh Kumar said Vidya Sagar was staying with his ‘bahnoi’ (brother-in-law), who is a resident of Hardia. Vidya Sagar and Rina had gone to the annual Basant Panchami fair on the nearby Saptarishi hills on Monday evening. “On their way back to Hardia, a group of her villagers intercepted them and attacked Vidya Sagar in the darkness. Rina, however, managed to escape and returned to the spot with her villagers. Her husband was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead,” the SHO said.
When contacted, former BJP MLA Kanhaiya said, “Mujhe isme mat ghasitiye (Don’t drag me into this controversy).”
