In India, Bidar farmers benefited most from crop insurance: MP

Farmers in Bidar district benefited highest from the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana in 2016-17 crop year in the county as they received Rs 149 crore as compensation for crop loss due to excess rain.  

In 2016-17, total 1.73 lakh farmers enrolled for the crop insurance scheme and 1.21 lakh farmers benefited out of the scheme and received Rs 149.20 crore as compensation from the insurance companies, Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, said here on Tuesday.

Farmers have paid total Rs 13.5 crore as premium amount while applying for the insurance coverage for their crop.  

In 2016-17 crop year, soyabean and tur was grown in total 1.25 lakh hectares in the district and due to heavy rain 85 % of the crops were damaged. Since most of the farmers are covered under the Fasal Bima Yojana, a large number of them have received the claim amount, he said. The crop insurance scheme was most successful in the district due to a special drive was conducted by him to encourage farmers to enroll themselves under the scheme to protect their crops from natural calamity, Khuba said.   He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh have appreciated his effort.
