New Delhi: The Indian Railways on Wednesday announced the setting up of a coach factory in Maharashtra’s Latur district to manufacture EMUs (electric multiple units) for suburban trains and coaches for metros.

The decision was taken on Wednesday, a day before the Union Budget 2018-19 is to be presented in Parliament, during a meeting between union railways minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai, a press statement issued by Goyal’s office said.

The statement said the project will bring massive employment opportunities and economic development to the Marathwada region, one of the most backward areas of Maharashtra. Besides, work on the project will be done on a high priority basis with fast track processing of all approvals. To implement the project, the Maharashtra state government has offered several concessions including land and taxes etc.

District Latur in the Marathwada region is one of the most backward areas of Maharashtra. There have been no major central government projects in the region.

The project will benefit ‘Make in India’ and bring employment to a large number of people, the statement said. Besides, it will also create an industrial ecosystem in the drought prone region boosting shift from agriculture to industry.

“It’s a great move," said Jaijit Bhattacharya, partner and head, economic, regulatory and policy advisory, KPMG in India. “The existing coach factories were not aligned to modern coaches, needed especially to cater to the need of EMUs. The modern coach factory will help to increase the speed of railways and the move is highly encouraging for the national carrier."
