No matter how ahead of the curve we like to think we are, when it comes to technology, our kids can nearly always outsmart us.

Or, unpleasantly surprise us. Especially with large data/ phone bills .

Mum Liz found this out to her cost recently, when her eight-year-old daughter somehow racked up a massive £1.8k iTunes bill.

What's more, the youngster had accrued this cost over mere weeks.

Liz's fatal error was giving her daughter her password for iTunes.

"We had given her the iTunes password and come the end of January, the end of school holidays , we get the American Express bill.

"And my husband finds a $3300-odd iTunes bill charged," she tells Mamamia .

Naturally, the couple were confused. Where on earth had this huge bill appeared from?

Fortunately, the culprit was close by, and it was easy to trace her steps.

"When I dug into it I discovered our eight-year-old had been downloading gems via her game," Liz explained.

"Basically, because she had the iTunes password, every time it asked her if she wanted to buy more gems, she'd just buy more gems.

"She was racking up like $150 at a time. The transactions had been going on over the entire school holidays."

The massive bill had come as a shock as this was the first the couple had heard about the charges.

There had been no attempt by iTunes to warn them of the account activity prior to the billing stage.

A device ban was implemented (

Which meant there was only one thing for Liz to do - cough up.

As for her daughter, she concludes: "When we finally found out about it, she was off devices for a considerable period of time."
