TIRUNELVELI: A man attempted self-immolation in a court in Tirunelveli on Monday as he was upset about the delay in getting justice in a cheque bounce case.
Sources said Edward Savarimuthu of Krishnapuram in Tirunelveli lent Rs 1 lakh to Dasan of Vallioor in 2010. In 2011, Dasan gave him a cheque for Rs 1 lakh. However, the cheque bounced after Edward deposited it in a bank. The same year Edward lodged a complaint in a judicial magistrate court in Tirunelveli.
The case has been pending trial since then.
Meanwhile, Dasan repaid Rs 59,000 to Edward even as the case continued to be adjourned. Six months ago, Dasan died. The case continued to be adjourned. On Monday too, it was adjourned by the judicial magistrate-IV. This upset Edward.
The petitioner who had brought kerosene hidden in a milk packet (tied to his hip) opened it, doused himself with the fuel and tried to set himself ablaze. Advocate Lakshmanan and a few others who were in the court hall stopped him and handed him over to police, who escorted him from the court and poured water on him.
A case was likely to be registered against Edward for bringing an inflammable substance to the court, the sources said.
