Though the Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) could not get huge funds after failing to find a place in the list of national-level smart city projects two years ago, the city later got a major boost in the form of a ₹557-crore augmented drinking water supply scheme and another ₹580-crore underground drainage project.

Eventually, the State government has also sanctioned ₹33 crore towards making a beginning in developing Nellore into a smart city with the objective of creating greater urban infrastructure in the long run.

Because of these schemes, hectic developmental and infrastructure works are under way throughout the city limits for the past one-and-a-half years.

The work on the drinking water scheme has progressed at a brisk pace and 75% of it has already been completed. Expected to be completed by July, the scheme is designed to increase supply of water from 85 MLD (million litres per day) now to 185 MLD by 2048.

The present requirement of water in Nellore is about 90 MLD with 46 MLD being drawn from the sources in the Penna river, 12 MLD from the summer storage tank and the remaining demand being met from local sources, including borewells.

The Housing and Urban Development Corperation Ltd (HUDCO), a public sector undertaking, provided 90% loan to this multi-crore project while the civic body mobilised the remaining 10% funds.

The present population of Nellore city and its surrounding localities is put at 6.5 lakh and this is expected to go up to 14 lakh by 2048.

“The water project is aimed at meeting future requirements of residents for the next 30 years. For this, the number of overhead supply tanks is going up from 39 to 71. Water distribution network for 640 km is being developed,” said T. Mohan, superintending engineer, public health, Nellore.

Treatment plant

A 122-MLD capacity water treatment plant was developed at Mohammadapuram as part of this HUDCO project. The supply channel is developed from main source at the Sangam barrage located 40 km away from Nellore.

Modern urban infrastructure has not developed enough in Nellore to match the requirements of the employees and workers arriving here from different parts of the country to work in industries, port and factories located within 20 to 40 km radius of the city and there is a growing public demand for this now.
