French rugby stars were questioned by police after a girl said she was assaulted at the team’s Scottish hotel, it is claimed today.

The French team’s flight from Edinburgh was grounded on Monday when players Louis Picamoles, Anthony Belleau, Jonathan Danty, Remi Lamerat and Felix Lambey were all quizzed by police.

Although Police Scotland found no crime had been committed, France coach Jacques Brunel later axed eight players from his Six Nations squad for “inappropriate behaviour” in the aftermath of the 32-26 defeat to Scotland at Murrayfield last weekend.

The players found themselves at the centre of a probe after a girl who was at the five-star Balmoral in Edinburgh said she had received some hard slaps.

She was understood to have been at the hotel with a group of girls.

Sports journalist Philippe Kallenbrunn makes the allegations in French newspaper Journal du Dimanche today.

He claims: “Three or four girls were in the room of a player, with other players. It is being claimed the girls were spanked. One of the girls had big bruises. Police were called but the girl making the complaint cancelled her accusation.”

The bizarre excuses given by players Arthur Iturria and Geoffrey Palis for facial injuries they sustained after the Murrayfield match are also in the French report.
