Callum McGregor spent his teenage years watching Alex McLeish’s Scotland.

Now the Celtic midfielder aims to spend the best spell of his career playing in it.

The Hoops star still remembers his excitement as a 14-year-old watching James McFadden score the winner against France in Paris with Eck in charge.

Now a regular under Brendan Rodgers at Parkhead, McGregor has set his sights on
establishing himself in the new Scotland set-up.

Celtic head to Russia with a 1-0 lead thanks to Callum McGregor's goal in Glasgow on Thursday night

After his wonder goal against Zenit in midweek, McGregor said: “I think it’s a good appointment for Scotland. He had the job before and has massive amounts of experience.

“He knows Scottish football and the players. When he had the job before we had some good results.

“I remember watching his Scotland teams when I was younger, including the France game.

“Those are the nights we can hopefully look forward to now and if we can
replicate that we can aim get to a major finals.”

Faddy strikes in Paris

The Celtic playmaker is adamant if he is selected for the much criticised double header against Peru and Mexico in the summer – he’ll be on the plane to South America.

The 24-year-old said: “I feel the international scene is the next level on for me to try to progress.

“And I’m up for the games obviously.

“As a footballer you want to play all the time, especially for your country because it’s an honour.

“If I’m selected for the games I’ll be there. It would be a short summer break but that’s football now.”
