PINEHURST, N.C. — A 91-year-old man died in a three-vehicle wreck in Pinehurst on Saturday, officials said.

Emergency responders were dispatched just before 4 p.m. to N.C. Highway 211 at the intersection of Murdocksville Road for a serious wreck

Firefighters used hydraulic powered rescue tools to pry open the door of the wrecked car to pull Lawrence Shoemaker from its hold. Vehicle paramedics immediately began CPR on Shoemaker.

A helicopter had been called for this incident but was canceled while in route due to his condition.

Shoemaker was taken by ambulance to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the emergency room.

The accident involved two Cadillac passenger cars and a Mazda passenger car. No other victims from this accident required transport to the hospital.

Both eastbound lanes and one of the westbound lanes of the highway were blocked by the wreck causing delays.

The Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and the Pinehurst Police Department responded to the incident.
