It’s won a legion of fans around the world since it was launched in 2016, combining an epic fantasy adventure with plenty of blood and gore.

And now fans of Square Enix’s dark fantasy series Goblin Slayer will no doubt be elated that the series will be getting the small screen treatment with an anime series.

Announced yesterday, studio White Fox will be bringing to life the adventures of Goblin Slayer as he takes the young and naive Priestess under his wing whilst attempting to kill any and all goblins (the hint is in the name).

The original novels (by Kumo Kagyu and Noboru Kannatsuki) and the manga (Kōsuke Kurose) focus on the adventures of the two characters and their newly formed adventuring party, with the tale centering around Goblin Slayer’s quest to kill as many of the creatures as possible; things usually get pretty gory as the adventurers carve their way through hordes of the things.

And that Dark Souls meets Lord of The Rings vibe is what has won the series so many fans, however, the news of an anime adaption has some worried.

Following swiftly on from the announcement that Goblin Slayer is due to be turned into an anime, fans took to the internet to express their concern that much of what makes the series so special, it’s violence, will be lost to censors.

The series focuses on the goblins being an abhorrent and evil race, and as you’d expect from evil creatures they’re brutal and sadistic (often violating and abusing captives before they murder them).

The whole point of why Goblin Slayer hates the creatures so much is this dark nature they possess – and, its something that’s shown plenty in the novels and manga.

However – as what happens with many mature animes – many are worried that the series will suffer on the small screen thanks censorship, which it’s something fans of the genre will recognize as an all too familiar gripe.

Essentially the print series features scenes of rape and excessive blood and gore, and its fan base is worried that removing this will create saddles the series with many problems, including, boring story lines and tepid action.

Recently both Re:Zero and Tokyo Ghoul have been critiqued by fans, especially in the UK and US, for having liberal amounts of censorship with gory scenes often being ‘blacked out’ (covered up by gloom and shadows being edited over the top or drained of colour).

However, whether or not Goblin Slayer will suffer the same fate, it’s almost without a doubt that some of the darker and more mature content of the print editions will be toned down.

Currently there’s no specific release date for the series, though it is expected to drop later this year.
