Jeremy Corbyn has declared that same-sex sex and relationships education should be introduced in schools.

The Labour leader made the proposal during a conversation with the Gay Times and LGBTQ podcast Homo Sapiens – hosted by singer Will Young and music video director Chris Sweeney – as part of LGBT History Month.

It comes following reports that the new Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds, appears to have scrapped such plans, previously backed by his predecessor Justine Greening.

Mr Corbyn said that sex education should be more about relationships, regardless of sexual preference, and the dangers of being exploited by a partner.

He said: "Sex education should involve same-sex as well as heterosexual relationships - it's about relationships.

“Too much of it is not about relationships and understanding each other, having respect for each other and what is a genuine relationship and what's an exploitative relationship; there's a big difference.

“It's giving young people the confidence to understand that a loving relationship is something to cherish and be proud of.

“An exploitative relationship is not."

Mr Young replied: "That's very important and it makes me think of pornography.

"I think it's so rife and people can get... people have phones when they're younger now and whether you're heterosexual or gay, bisexual, whatever – people will formulate their opinions on what a relationship is by watching pornography."

Mr Corbyn added: "A lot of that is violent and exploitative."

In the interview, which will feature on Homo Sapiens Extra on February 23, he also spoke about homophobia in the UK and the hateful rhetoric against minorities in the wake of Donald Trump becoming president.
