Another Mahadalit killed in Nawada within 2 days
PATNA: One Bhuwaneshwar Manjhi (60) of Dharampur village under the Rajauli police station area in Nawada district was murdered after his eyes were gouged out on Saturday. His body was found from a field near the village on Sunday.
This is the second incident of a Mahadalit’s murder in Nawada district within 48 hours. On March 2, one Raju Rajbanshi (57) was lynched for protesting against sexual harassment of some women at village Taran under the Sirdalla police station area.
Ten persons, including one Bambam Yadav, were named accused in the murder case. No one was arrested till Sunday.
With regard to Manjhi’s murder, Rajauli police station SHO Awadesh Kumar said the victim’s right eye was gouged out with a sharp-edged weapon, which might have resulted in his death. The SHO said Manjhi’s body was lying in a pool of blood.
“No other injury marks were spotted on the body, nor any suspicious object was recovered from spot,” the SHO said, adding the reasons behind the killing was still not known as Manjhi did not have enmity with anyone in the village.
He said Manjhi was living alone as one of his sons works at a brick kiln in Allahabad while another son, who is mentally unstable, lives in a neighbouring village.
“The deceased owned 1.5 bigha land which he had mortgaged to a fellow villager. His wife died three years ago and he somehow managed to make ends meet,” SHO said. Manjhi’s nephew has lodged an FIR against unknown persons.
Meanwhile, in the Taran lynching case, Sirdalla SHO Raj Kumar said Bambam and nine other accused were absconding. “Bambam and others lynched Rajbanshi with sticks and rods. Bambam owns a shop on the village roadside. He passed lewd comments on women crossing his shop to relieve themselves. Rajbanshi used to oppose Bambam for that. Finally, on Friday, Bambam and others lynched Rajbanshi,” SHO said.
