Cause for concern: Women’s Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari discussing the attacks on women with Agriculture Minister S. Chandramohan Reddy on Sunday.

Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari accompanied by member Thammisetti Ramadevi called on the victims of an attack by a ‘mentally disturbed’ man at Kovur, at the DSR Government General Hospital at Dargamitta here on Sunday.

She enquired from the doctors about the condition of the two victims receiving treatment for the past two days there.

The victims explained their harrowing experiences on the fateful Friday night when the man carried out a series of attacks on lone women and children in Kovur town before escaping by daybreak.

Ms. Rajakumari said that a deterrent punishment such as ‘encounter’ should be given to the miscreant who was responsible for the attacks on women. “It is a very serious offence. The person responsible for this obviously had no respect for community and for law,” she said.

The two victims were expected to be discharged in four to seven days and they were afraid of going back home after the harrowing experience, the women’s panel chief said.

Stating that these incidents became a challenge for the commission, Ms. Rajakumari recalled how atrocities on women and girls were not getting properly reported and investigated as was evident from the Bhattiprolu incident in Guntur district. An autorickshaw driver, who was an ex-serviceman, was finally caught in a missing girl’s case and he was charged with abducting the schoolgirl to a remote place in Jammu and Kashmir.

Ms. Rajakumari said that the auto driver could be arrested only after a massive manhunt launched by the police at the instance of the Chief Minister.

She thanked the Nellore district police for launching a similar hunt by 70 to 80 policemen, clues team and the dog squad to nab the accused in the Kovur case.

Clues gathered

SP P.H.D. Ramakrishna said they had analysed the sequence of events and got some clues on the person responsible for the attacks, which would lead to his arrest soon. He appealed to the villagers not to panic as steps were taken to ensure safety of the residents in Kovur and its surroundings.
