The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Wednesday retained Jehanabad seat as well as the Araria Lok Sabha seat in Bihar. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), meanwhile, managed to hold on to Bhabua assembly seat. Dedicating the win to the people of Bihar, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav called the results “a victory of ideology of RJD Supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav.” BJP’s Sushil Modi, meanwhile, said that the party accepts the mandate of the people.

The bye-election to the Araria seat was necessitated after the death of sitting RJD lawmaker Mohd Taslimuddin. The contest was mainly between RJDs Sarafaraz Alam, Taslimuddin’s son, and BJPs Pradip Singh, who had won the seat in 2009 and finished runners-up in 2014. In Jehanabad, the Assembly seat that fell vacant after the death of Mundrika Yadav and the RJD gave the ticket to his son Kumar Krishna Mohan. On the other hand, the BJP in Bhabua fielded Rinky Rani, the wife of the deceased candidate Anand Bhushan Pandey

Counting of votes for the three seats in Bihar began amid tight security around 8 am today. Araria went to polling on Sunday (March 11) along with two Assembly seats of Jehanabad and Bhabua.
