RJD wins Araria LS seat & Jehanabad bypoll, BJP in Bhabua

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Wednesday won the Araria Lok Sabha byelection in Bihar and at the same time retained the Jehanabad Assembly constituency seat.

The BJP, on the other hand, had a saving grace when it emerged victorious in the Bhabua Assembly seat.

In a keenly watched contest, the RJD's Sarfaraz Alam won with a margin of around 60,000 votes defeating BJP's Pradeep Singh in Araria.

Sarfaraz is the son of former Union Minister Mohammed Taslimuddin, whose untimely demise led to the by-polls.

Despite Modi wave, Taslimuddin had won from Araria in 2014 Lok Sabha elections defeating Singh by over 1.5 lakh votes.

In Jehanabad Assembly constituency, the RJD's Krishna Mohan alias Suday Yadav emerged victorious defeating his nearest rival Abhiram Sharma of the JD(U) by over 35,000 votes.

Abhiram was JD(U) MLA from Jehanabad from 2010-15.

During the 2015 Assembly polls, RJD's Mundrika Singh Yadav won from this Maoist-infested constituency. However, his death necessitated the by-poll. Suday is Mundrika Yadav's son.

In Bhabua, where the RJD left the seat for its alliance partner Congress, BJP's Rinki Pandey trounced the grand old party's nominee Shambhu Singh Patel by over 15,000 votes.

Rinki is the widow of former BJP MLA Anand Bhushan Pandey, whose death necessitated the Bhabua by-poll.

The by-polls in one Lok Sabha constituency and two Assembly seats were held on March 11.
