Thunderstorms have broken out fresh over many parts of the South Peninsula along a track negotiated by last week’s depression, with associated clouds growing its footprint in North from the Laccadive Sea (South-West of Sri Lanka).

India Met Department (IMD) attributed this to the presence of trough in easterlies from the Comorin area to South Madhya Maharashtra across Interior Tamil Nadu and Interior Karnataka.

Backup trough

Providing backup for it was another trough, though not connected directly, lying over Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining South-East Bay of Bengal (from South of Sri Lanka towards the Andaman & Nicobar region).

Additionally, a contra-indicative high-pressure area has moved North from the South-West Bay of Bengal (off Tamil Nadu), making available larger scope for rain-friendly easterly winds to blow inland.

On Sunday, the clouds strayed into South Kerala and adjoining Tamil Nadu, steering clear of Lakshadweep, spreading out to the North along the West Coast and to the East over Interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining Karnataka.

At 6 pm, the densest of these clouds were parked over two patches over South Kerala and North Kerala, covering the hills bordering Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and even Andhra Pradesh.

A number of places here received thundershowers while less dense clouds hung over an area right up to Gokarna, Haveri, Davangere, Tumkuru, Bengaluru, Madanapalle, Ambur, Krishnagiri, Mandya, Mysuru, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Dindigul, Virudunagar, Sivakasi, and Tirunelveli.

Rainfall

The Chennai Regional Met Office said that a few places over Interior Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala and isolated places over Coastal Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka recorded moderate to heavy rain during the 24 hours ending Sunday morning. Kerala and South Interior Karnataka might go on to receive isolated to scattered rainfall during the next five days while gains would be limited to two or three days for Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
