Local athletes shine in Western NC All-Star games

ANDREWS — The Midwest swept the West on Saturday in the fourth annual Western N.C. 1A All-Star basketball games that were played at Andrews High School.

In the girls game, the Midwest won 58-50 as Cherryville's Skyler Miller (six points, seven rebounds) and Piedmont Community Charter's Demoniya Cole (nine points) were standouts. Also playing for the Midwest team were Bessemer City's Anna Ramsey, Highland Tech's Judah Tucker, Lincoln Charter's Katie Baich and Piedmont Community Charter's Courtney Williams and Cydney Williams. Piedmont Community Charter's David Williams was one of the assistant coaches.

In the boys game, the Midwest won 76-57 behind MVP Jehlon Johnson of Lincoln Charter. Johnson had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Lincoln Charter's Kendrick Davis (13 points), Zeke Mayfield (11 points) and London England (10 points), Cherryville's Clint Gantt (five points) and Jacob Harden (four points) and Bessemer City's Michael Lamar (three points) were other offensive contributors. Also playing for the Midwest team were Bessemer City's Jay Sadler and Piedmont Community Charter's Chase Martin and Christian Walker. Lincoln Charter's Bradley Gabriel as head coach and Cherryville's Scott Harrill as one of the assistant coaches.

College men's tennis

Belmont Abbey records sweep (Saturday): The host Crusaders swept Johnson C. Smith and Lees-McRae 9-0 to improved to 10-15 overall and 3-0 in Conference Carolinas.

The Abbey, which visits Newberry on Monday at 4 p.m., got singles wins from Jacob Andress, Thomas Rowzie, Isaiah Cole, Mike Nguyen, Adam Nesnow, Louis Lockwood, James Delaney, George Barfoot, Zachary Blythe, Austin Schepel, Andres Astudillo and Chris Moore and doubles wins from Andres Astudillo-Daniel Astudillo, Nesnow-Rowzie, Emmanual Naranjo-Nguyen, Barfoot-Delaney, Blythe-Henrique Leal and Tomas Parso-Michal Rapsik.

College women's tennis

Belmont Abbey 8, Lees-McRae 1 (Saturday): Riley Ellingson, Darian DeFrench, Morgan Nguyen, Alex Weber and Erika Noblett took singles victories and Ellingston-Teagan McNamara, DeFrench-Erica Dorn, Noblett-Morgan Zahnd took doubles wins vor the Crusaders (8-1, 3-0), who host Chowan on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

College women's lacrosse

Belmont Abbey 19, Chowan 4 (Saturday): Rebecca Luca had six goals and three assists for the Crusaders (6-2, 2-0), who host North Greenville on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
