Vijayawada: Police arrest one for elderly couple murder

The suspects, who drove to Chennai in the couple’s stolen car, met with an accident.

VIJAYAWADA:  The Gudivada police achieved a breakthrough in the sensational murder of an elderly couple in Gudivada on Saturday with the arrest of an accused in Chennai. The first clue, cops said, was that the vehicle stolen by the accused was spotted in Chennai. Gudivada deputy superintendent of police (DSP) P Mahesh sent a team to Chennai where it was learnt that the accused had met with an accident. 
Locals who witnessed the accident told the police where the accused had gone after the car crash, following which one person was nabbed. The identity of the accused who is under detention has not been revealed as the others involved in the case are yet to be traced. It is suspected that the driver, Sai (29), was also involved in the murders.

According to sources, the person detained by the police is a close friend of the driver and a resident of Dhaniyalapet in Gudivada. The driver was allegedly aware of the financial transactions of the deceased couple, including the recent sale of their aqua pond.On Saturday, the couple -- Boppana Saibabu Chowdary and his wife Nagamani -- was found lying in a pool of blood. Saibabu was a businessman who owned a rice mill in town.

The couple is survived by two daughters and a son. The assailants killed them by attacking them with knives and decamped with gold ornaments and the Toyota Etios which was parked in front of the house. The fingerprints collected from the crime scene has been matched with that of previous offenders. “With the help of CCTV footage, we came to know that the killers escaped to Chennai in the car belonging to Saibabu,” a police officer requesting anonymity told TNIE. When contacted,  Gudivada DSP Mahesh said the case was under investigation and the accused would be presented before the media soon.
