Elephants kill two in Dhenkanal

At least two persons were killed following attacks by elephants at two places in the district on Thursday.

DHENKANAL: At least two persons were killed following attacks by elephants at two places in the district on Thursday. The victims have been identified as Niranjan Mohanty of Damodarnali village and Achyuta Rout of Chaulia village.

As per reports, 70-year-old Niranjan had gone out of his house when a herd of elephants att a c k e d him. He died on the spot. In another incident, Achyuta, and some other villagers, were plucking brinjals from their farm field when an elephant attacked him. An injured Achyuta was admitted to District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) where he succumbed.

On being informed, Cuttack Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sudarshan Patra, who is also in-charge of Dhenkanal, visited the spot and took stock of the situation. He also released `40,000 each to the deceased families. ACF JN Das also visited the villages. Meanwhile, locals have demanded that adequate steps be taken to check man-animal conflict in the area.
