Housing and Economic Development Committee of the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council will hold its monthly meeting on Tues., April 17 at 7 pm at the Bowditch School, 82 Green St. (Community Room – entrance on sidewalk level, left of front stairs).  On the agenda will be the status of State Legislation regarding short term rentals, discussion of Shattuck Campus changes, and update on Arborway Yard in the JP/Rox Transportation Study.

JP Zoning Meeting, Wednesday, April 18th, Agenda: 26 Clive Street (create off-street parking for two residential vehicles), the agenda for that meeting will include 561-579 Centre Street (temporary outdoor parking for twenty spaces, for use by employees of Arbour Hospital; spaces will only be used M-F from 6:00AM to 11:45PM; current parking agreement between property owner and Arbour Hospital in effect until September 1, 2018, may be renewed annually by the parties) and 165 Boylston Street (change occupancy from two-family to three-family dwelling; separate second floor from third floor to create third unit; electrical work to create third metered unit and to power 220 volt cooktop in kitchen area) will be on the agenda for April 18.

Boston Police Department Meetings, The Neighborhood Advisory Committee will be held on Tues. April 17 at 6:30pm at 3347 Washington St. All interested residents are invited to attend.

The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council(JPNC) will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 24 at 7:00pm at Farnsworth House, 90 South Street. On the agenda will be a presentation from State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz. Also on the agenda will be reports from the Working Committees. All interested residents are invited to attend.

Seeking Interested Local Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs for New Mentoring Program, In response to feedback from local small businesses and entrepreneurs, JP Centre/South Main Streets is excited to kick off a new mentoring program this year. The program will provide a valuable mentoring network to local small business owners and entrepreneurs. There will be opportunities to connect participants with entrepreneurs from other local university and business associations. parkrun is a grassroots, community running event, run by volunteers for the local running and walking community. We hold free timed 5k events every week.  Everyone is invited to run, jog or walk for 5k (two laps around the pond). We are very proud to be the first parkrun in Boston, MA. Its

been a very successful initiative for getting people of all ages outside to exercise, and to meet members of their local community. We meet on

Saturdays at 8:45am at the top of the Sugarbowl. Run starts at 9:00am.

Seniors

JP@Home is sponsoring a discussion about “Aging Eyes” on April 26, 2-3:30 pm, in the community room at the JP Library on South Street. The event is free. The guest speaker is Dr. Eli Peli, the Moakley Scholar in Aging Eye Research at Schepens Eye Research Institute, Massachusetts Eye and Ear, and Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. Since 1983, Dr. Peli has been caring for visually impaired patients as the director of the Vision Rehabilitation Service at the New England Medical Center Hospitals (now Tufts-Medical Center) in Boston. Dr. Peli’s principal research interests are image processing in relation to visual function and clinical psychophysics in low vision rehabilitation, image understanding and evaluation of display-vision interaction.  He has worked extensively with patients with macular degeneration and vision rehabilitation after stroke. Dr. Peli’s presentation will be followed by a Q & A session. JP@Home is a group of more than 100 senior citizens whose goal is to age in place.

Caregiver Support Workshop, Savvy Caregiver is a training program for caregivers who care for someone with Alzheimer’s or related Dementias. It assists family members (or friends) in their new role as caregiver, a role for which they may be unprepared. The program builds information and knowledge about the illness, helps to develop skills to manage daily life, and creates an outlet to share challenges and experiences with others. The program is offered at no charge and meets 1 day per week for 6 weeks. *If you would like to attend the class, but need someone to care for your loved one while you do so, respite care can be arranged.          Chelsea Jewish Hospice & Palliative Care (CJHPC) is seeking volunteers to offer companionship and support 1-2 hours per week to persons facing terminal illness who reside in Jamaica Plain.  Volunteers can make a difference for patients through activities such as holding a hand, listening to music, running an errand, or even just sitting quietly. Academic Announcements

JAMAICA PLAIN RESIDENTS AND BRIMMER AND MAY STUDENT WIN ATHLETIC AWARDS, The following Jamaica Plain residents and Brimmer and May students have earned athletic accolades for their accomplishments this winter: Ethan Eastwood ’18, of Jamaica Plain, received the Most Improved Player award for his participation on the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team. He is the son of Mr. Patrick and Mrs. Janet Eastwood. Nicholas Jaffer ’23, of Jamaica Plain, received the Sportsmanship Award for his participation on the 6th/7th Grade Boys’ Basketball team. He is the son of Drs. Farouc Jaffer and Katherine Economy.

To qualify for the Dean’s List in the College of Arts & Sciences, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.6 or above and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.

Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, honored Jamaica Plain residents Mairead Hayes and Clara Parsons with Gold Distinction for a first semester grade average of A or A- with no grade below B+. Silver Distinction for achieving a B+ average with no grade below a B- was presented to Alexandra Iannella, Sidney Parker, and Rheanna Patterson.
