Arsenal fan Jeremy Corbyn has led a heartfelt tribute to Arsène Wenger after the manager announced he is leaving the club after 22 years.

The Labour leader switched to French to pay tribute to the legendary boss at the Emirates, which is in his north London constituencuy.

Mr Corbyn and Wenger are both 68 years old - and they're not so different.

They both clung on despite calls to quit, and Labour's leader backed the "amazing, very intelligent man" boss.

Today Mr Corbyn wrote on Facebook: "Thank you Arsène Wenger for all you have done for Arsenal and our community in North London, and for the inspiration you have given to young people to take up football.

"Thank you for all the achievements, over such a long period, for the club I love.

"Three Premier League titles, the unbeaten season, a record breaking seven FA Cups and revolutionising the English game.

"Thank you for the beautiful football and wonderful memories.

"And thank you for the example you have set in standing up to abuse and criticism, proving you are stronger than all your critics.

"Merci beaucoup, Monsieur Wenger, pour votre bon travail."

The Frenchman, 68, had another year left on his deal but will leave the club at the end of the current campaign.

He announced the news in an emotional letter to the club's supporters.

“After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season," he said.

Arsenal confirmed they will appoint Wenger's successor "as soon as possible" with the likes of Carlo Ancelotti, Leonardo Jardim and Thomas Tuchel among the frontrunners.

Wenger joined Arsenal in 1996 and won three Premier League titles during his time with the club.

He led the famous Invincibles side in the 2003-04 season and also won seven FA Cup titles.

But the Champions League continued to elude the Frenchman, who took Arsenal to the final in 2006 but lost to Barcelona.
