As well as St George"s Day in England, he will urge the Scottish Parliament and Northern Ireland and Wales assemblies to mark their national days with a holiday.

That would mean new UKwide holidays on St David"s Day (March 1), St Patrick"s Day (March 17) and St Andrew"s Day (November 30) as well as on April 23.

With eight public holidays, the UK has the fewest of any G20 or EU country.

The Labour leader is to make the pledge when he addresses the annual conference of the Communication Workers Union in Bournemouth.

He will say: "If we win the next election, St George"s Day will become a national holiday.

"It will be a day where we can all show our pride and celebrate our tradition of fairness, inclusivity and social justice.

"We will give our workers four extra days" paid holiday.

"The four nations that make up our country are more divided as a result of the damaging and divisive policies of this Conservative government.”

There have been calls to make St George"s Day as big an event as the Fourth of July celebrations in the United States.
