An Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Thursday ordered the remand of a 36-year-old trader, Ibrahim Adeshina, in prison for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl.
Adeshina, who resides at No. 13, Anjorin Street, Ikorodu, had pleaded not guilty to a charge of rape.
The magistrate, W. B. Balogun, remanded the accused in prison pending the receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The prosecutor, Sgt. John Iberedem, said that Adeshina committed the offence on March 9 at his friend’s house – No. 6, Itunla Street, Oba-Ale in Ikorodu.
Iberedem told the court that the accused had asked the girl to help him buy some cigarette sticks.
The prosecutor said that incident happened when the girl was returning from the school where she had gone to pick her boss children.
He said: “When the accused observed that the girl refused to accede to his request, he asked her to pick something for him from his friend’s house.
“The accused then followed her inside, covered her mouth and defiled her.”
Iberedem said the offence contravened Section 262 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the offender if convicted is liable to life imprisonment.
