Thunderstorms whipped up a tornado Friday afternoon that touched down in Coral Springs south of the Sawgrass Expressway near Country Hills Elementary School, according to the National Weather Service.

The tornado lasted from 2:37 p.m. until 2:43 p.m. and moved at a maximum speed of 65 mph. It was about 40 yards wide and nearly 2 miles long, the weather service said.

It moved from south of the Sawgrass Expressway just east of Coral Springs Drive, continuing toward the intersection of University Drive and Wiles Road. It lifted just south of Wiles Road near Northwest 85th Avenue.

Damage was limited to tree tops and a street sign.
