At least eight persons, including seven children, died in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district after the boat they were travelling in capsized in Kosi river on Sunday. Seven persons were rescued, police said.
The boat, which was carrying 15 people, capsized near Ramnagar Bind Toli under Nagra village panchayat of Naugachia police district. The children were aged between six and 12 years.
Police said the incident took place at around 3 pm when the occupants of the boat were returning to Mohanpur in Purnea district, across the river, after attending a wedding in Naugachia. Naugachhia Superintendent of Police (SP) Nidhi Rani said strong winds swept through the area and the boat, which was being “ferried illegally and was overloaded,” toppled under the impact.
