PUNE: The soaring mercury in Vidarbha set new temperature records in three places in the region on Monday. While Chandrapur had the highest day temperature recorded by any India Meteorological Department (IMD) station in the country since March 2018, the mercury rose to a 10-year high in Nagpur and Yavatmal.
Chandrapur’s day temperature on Monday climbed to 46.8 degrees C, the highest day temperature this summer (March-April) for any location in the country.
It was also the highest April day temperature here in the past 5 years. Nagpur recorded 45.6 degrees C and Yavatmal 44.5 degrees C, the highest day temperatures for the two locations in April since the past 10 years.

On the other hand, Pune had some respite from heat on Monday as both Shivajinagar and Lohegaon observatories recorded a dip in day temperatures. Temperatures fell below the 40 degrees C mark, to 38.1 degrees C and 39.9 degrees C respectively.
A couple of days ago, Churu in Rajasthan had recorded the highest day temperature of this summer at 46.5 degrees C.
IMD scientist A D Tathe told TOI that before Monday, the highest day temperature in Nagpur was 45.5 degrees C, recorded on April 18 last year. On the same day, Yavatmal too had recorded its previous highest day temperature of 44 degrees C.
Tathe told TOI that in 2017, most of the heat was experienced during March-end and the first week of April. “This year, April-end has been consistently warm for Vidarbha. The anticyclone over the
Bay of Bengal is blocking moisture towards this region, while the second anti-cyclone over the Arabian Sea is causing warm air to penetrate into Vidarbha. The clear skies here are also causing solar radiation to directly reach the earth’s surface, while the absence of any thunderstorm activity has kept Vidarbha warm this season,” he said.
Tathe said that temperatures may further rise, going up to 46 degrees C in many cities during the next few days.
