Mumbai: After Asangoan and Neral - the Matheran section, it is the turn of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus heritage building to get illuminated with wind power, a green energy.

The Central Railways (CR) has entered into an agreement with Pavan Energy, a Government of India undertaking, to provide wind power at Rs 5.18 per unit. The CR is currently purchasing the power for more than Rs 10 per unit from the private supplier. The exercise will not only save energy but also save the exchequer Rs 1.5 crore.

The CSMT heritage building, which houses the general manager’s office, telephone exchange, engineering department, personnel department and the public relations office, will now be run on green energy. Mankhurd station is also on its way to be converted into a green station by March next year.

According to the agreement, six mega watt of  green energy will be generated by wind turbines to be set up by M/s Pavan Energy in Sangali district. The green energy will be used at six different stations of CR and South Eastern Railway. The stations include, CSMT, Manmad, Bhusawal and Nagpur among others.

A CR spokesperson said that a total of 12.93 million units of green energy is expected to be generated from wind turbines. “The energy will be received through the grid connection to various points of CR. This power purchase will be utilised for meeting the requirement of Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO) and the agreement will be valid for 25 years. An estimated amount of Rs 1.5 crores will be saved on electricity bills through this agreement,” he added.
